hey there you! i just emailed you a big long letter(electronically speaking). check your email... i will be there... s.

6/27/2004
Greetings, Sally ! This is an almost desperate attempt to get an answer from you... Anyway I'm glad to see/read that your silence of over a year is simply due to the usual overloaded life-style. Drop me a line when you find the seconds... yours forever Jörg

6/23/2004
Sounds good to me also. I know last year at Common Ground went over hitting melody notes at good times in breaks. That way you can stray a bit from the melody - but still seems like your there when it matters. MB

6/21/2004
I'm with Bill on this one. That is just what I need too. I have been trying to figure this out for a few tunes that were new to me. I end up (I feel) putting too many notes in there - this is suicide when trying to play it fast. Really looking forward to July,

Cheers for now, Bill

6/20/2004
sounds good to me. You pretty much hit the nail on the head regarding the figuring out of critical notes to gain the essence of the tune. good place to start!

6/19/2004
Hi Sally, A couple Im struggling with are #@&^% fiddle tunes in D. I realize they're not your favorite either. Maybe we could figure out ways to at least identify the critical notes in the melodies, so it sounds like a educated fake. Maybe just disect all the open D patterns (including pentatonic) we can come up with ...Im sure Rob has a few. Whiskey Before Breakfast & Saint Annes Real are two I find troublesome in particular...but, I dont want to bog down the group cause I havn't done the proper homework on a couple of crazy fiddle tunes. Almost have the capo-less version of 'Old Daingerfield' in A..(I know Rob has that worked out). 'Road to Columbus' needs some tidying on my part and may be a fun one for a group. Totally psyched, and cant wait!! Bill Adams

6/14/2004
hey anybody out there in dobro land attending the academy- got any tunes/songs you been working on that are creating a challenge? if i have some kind of potential list to work off of , that would be great! thanks, sally

6/13/2004
Yeah, Spencer tried really hard, but like Sally sez, it it what it is. Sigh.

Hey, I had a missed call on my cell phone from Ernie last week...I called back and left him a voice mail, but haven't heard anything yet...is he going to be there for sure?

MB...solid clean is better than fancy dirty!

6/11/2004
hey Spencer! welcome to the board! I guess it is time for you to start warming up the old arms and hands! we have been having some pretty outrageous weather here, so be sure to bring rain gear... i too wish Lee was going to be here, but hey, it is what it is... Hey Michael, I don't know if you can get the former forum submissions anymore, the best way to find out is to email the webmaster, ben o'connor. sorry for the lack of capitalization here, just being lazy! anyway, not too much longer now! see ya, sally

6/10/2004
Hey everybody, I've never put one of these messages in here before. Very much looking forward to RG. I told Lee he'd be sorry if he didn't come but he just wouldn't listen to me. Been very busy with hardly any time to pick. I'm so outta shape that when I went to the little jam the other night and was playing lots of fast tunes, my forearm began to throb. I guess I gotta get my playing muscles up. Spencer

6/9/2004
Sally - are you able to get a full transcript of your guest book. I hadn't written down the ideas for instruction at RGA, and now most of them are gone. MB

6/9/2004
Thanks Sally. I am already entered, but I have never been in one (or even seen one) so I wasn't to sure how to decide what to play. I've got some decent ideas. I figured one nice toney piece, then something a little more upbeat. I figure between beefing up practice for the next month, and then a week at the academy, I should be playing 1/2 decent by then. No accompaniment though - hmmm - I have to keep thinking about tunes. Have you ever seen contests where people play the same tunes. I guess that's why it would be good not to pick to standard of a dobro tune. But on the same note, I would think a familiar tune would be good, especially if the judges aren't dobro-nuts. Hmmm - decisions decisions. MB

6/9/2004
just think CLARITY in your playing, lots of soul, play something you really love, and that you play well...

6/9/2004
Hi all! HI 'specially to Dave from Glasgow! we are going to miss you here this year! kind of won't be the same without you! we here in Lyons had a massive, and i do mean massive thunderstorm- incredibly scary yet beautiful! Almost three, yes three feet of hail in about 45 minutes, people were digging their cars out from it...that was near Denver. Hey Michael, don't worry, i won't be judging this year, will be in NC that weekend of RG fester. I am pretty sure you should accompany yourself only, They invite staff instructors or artists to do the judging that kind of thing. Definitely you should enter. Last year had some fairly good constestants, so my advice is not to get to fancy, often it can be a pro musician who is one of your three judges, and the worst thing you can do is to try to get too fancy, and play sloppy- that is all the advice i can think to offer up for any of you. Hi Bill, if you are reading this too... little over a month away! Lennie gets here next wednesday, and into the studio we go for his recording. am really really looking forward to it, he is a great songwriter and player as well... miss ya all, see ya soon! sally

6/8/2004
Hi everyone, dave in glasgow here. Been looking at all your chat and envying you going to rg. Bill when you email spencer you should ask him about doing some wee business cards for you. Lee have you bought another horn?? have fun

dave

6/7/2004
Hey Sally - MB again. A couple RG questions that hopefully you can answer. Who usually judges the dobro instrument competition. And do most people have accompaniment, or go solo?

6/6/2004
Speaking of rain - we had a lot of it at Graves. Both Lee andf I called our visits short a bit. After 24 hours straight of rain - wasn;t gonna be easy to keep anything dry with more rain. It was funb anyway though. The first day and a half was great. MB

6/6/2004
Just got back from a nice festival in the Shennadoah Valley. It was gresat hanging out with Lee again. His new Horn sure does sing. Now just about a month and a half to kill before Lyons. Can't wait. MB

6/6/2004

6/5/2004
Now anaheims are great just roasted until the skins char -- peel them and just serve with olive oil and fresh bread. And a bottle of chilled Pino Grigio.

6/3/2004
Anaheims to be specific! just finishing up a day in the studio, hard to be inside during perfect colorado weather...

6/3/2004
Whoo Hoo - hot peppers!

6/3/2004
getting closer and closer to the academy- hey bill, send spencer an email to talk to him about when your arrival date, all that stuff is... just talked with him a few days ago, he is looking to arrive a bit early, so maybe you guys can do some hangng out... s. PS- hopefully my hot peppers will be ready to cook when you all arrive! sally

6/1/2004
Hey Sally -- I'm used to rain. I live in Bolton!

Bill

6/1/2004
So we are all hanging on that 0.56% chance you will make an appearance!

5/31/2004
Howdy, Lee here...

Well, it's a 99.44% chance I won't be in Lyons this year after all. I'll be in MT the week before, but have to get back for a gig the weekend before RG, and another the weekend of the festival, so I'm bummed...I was hoping to combine a stop in CO with that trip. Missing RG is actually one of the contributing factors for me making the Graves Mtn. Festival MB!

Sorry folks, I'll miss y'all...and lie to me and say you had an awful time to make me feel better! ;-)

5/31/2004
Lee's not enrolled in the academy, but he recently posted the following on the JDBB "Man, I'd still like to figure out a way to get out to Lyons and hang out with youse guys a bit...don't be surprised if I just show up!" I wouldn;t put it past him - he just called me tonight to let me know that he's showing up at a festival in my neck of the woods Wednesday. I'm looking forward to checking out his new horn and picking with him again. I am also looking forward to working hard at the academy Sally. Right now I'm just busy practicing so that it doesn't look like I've regressed since last summer at Common Ground ;~). MB

5/31/2004
hey anyone know if lee hiers will be there??

5/31/2004
ou guys are just silly- i just got home from a well needed mini-vacation/working holiday in northern california, there is just no place like it... hope you boys are geared up for working hard at the academy!!! bring your rain gear, as when it finally does decide to rain here, it downpours!! anybody heard from spencer or ernie or Lee??? sally

5/28/2004
So -- preflight jam list then?

Should be a giggle!

5/28/2004

5/27/2004
No doubt. Plenty of time to sleep on the plane, and once I'm home at 2 PM. MB

5/27/2004
I reckon we pack your gear and pick all night -- easier than rising at 5am! :-)

5/26/2004
Well yea it was me Bill. How'd you guess. Maybe because it seems like just me, you and Sally, with an occasional hello from Lee, or someone who has a golf course webpage. LOL. Yeah I got the extra day booked. Cost me about $100 for the flight change. And another $45 for the Saturday festival ticket, but that Saturday line-up is great. I also see the potential for a lot of folks to be playing across acts. Especially if Jerry is there sans band, with TOB and Sam B havings sets after JDs set with Bela. HMMM. Gonna have to leave the lodge at about 5:00 am Sunday, but it will be worth it. MB

5/26/2004
LOL -- and that was me! Bill

5/26/2004
I take it that it's you posting MB? Extra day -- good move.

Hi Sally --how are ya? Busy?

5/26/2004
Hey there - just checking in to say hello. I just extended my CO trip by one day so I can Saturday at RG. Killer line-up. Coming up on busy season for you Sally. I can't wait for RockyGrass. I may also try to pop up to Common Ground one evening or afternoon to see if any pickin's going on.

5/16/2004
www.rockyknollcc.com

Great site Sally! Love it!!!

5/6/2004
great suggestion Michael! I have been working on that with a few of my students here, it is very challenging both to me and to the student as well. Lots of good things come out of that idea/approach. it is getting very hot here these days, in the 90's- bring your sunscreen! see ya soon! sally

5/5/2004
I once did a workshop with Stacy Phillips and although his playing style was mind boggling, the main worthwhile thing I got out of that workshop was a discussion of scales in alternate positions. Of course I neglected working on that over the past years. After re-invigoration at Merlefest I am beefing up my practice regimine and want to start working on that. I started last night with the pentatonic for the 4 chord at the 1 position. Pretty neat stuff. Any other ideas like that would be cool. Sally - I'll e-mail Rob with some of the ideas we've been going over here soon. I talked about RGA when I saw him in Arlington a few weeks ago. Didn't get a chance to talk to him at MF - Michael.

4/20/2004
Hey Michael, that is a good suggestion, I will be sure to cover that. Another thing you can do is to email Rob at his website and let him know what you would like from him as well! I think the way we will work the class schedule is the same way the two of us have done it before, in which we decided to split the class in half and each one of us take half a class for the morning, and then exchange for the other half in the afternoon, that seemed to work pretty well. I know Rob and I will do at least one class together, likely do two classes together as well. thanks for the ideas! Keep them coming! Sally

4/19/2004
Oh - and that was me (MB) with the fill suggestion.

4/19/2004
Back to ideas for Rockygrass - I don't remember what I wrote earlier, and can't go too far back - so I'll throw this out there and risk duplicating suggestions. I feel like I'm in a bit of a rut on fills. I seem to do the same 3-4 fills with variations all the time. I'd like ideas on new licks and how to mix things up a little.

4/7/2004
Hi all, sally here, just checking in. I did in fact when I recorded Crossin back in the 80's- egads was it that long ago???-- tune down both B's to Bb's- nowadays, I just use straight B's- actually offers up a bit more, I think, that way... all is well, just finished a weekend in Nashville, this time was great fun. the Boomchicks tracked a song for Alison Brown's new recording. was great great fun.... now it is back to spring, full blooms, and changing weather... finally starting to rain... Hey Bill, Frankie Lane, the dobro player from Ireland, recorded Jerusalem Ridge on his first solo record... YOu might want to check that disk out if you don't have it. there are great tunes on that recording. His web site is www,frankielane.com see ya soon, bring the single malt.... don't forget... xoxo, sally

4/6/2004
Thanks -- just been noodling around Jerusalem Ridge in the Gm tuning -- sounds good. Only just discovered this tune -- finding it challenging -- it seems to have 4 parts rather than just 2. Don't seem to have any tab for it -- a few hours with my Wavelab and Kenny Baker Bill Monroe album I reckon. Cheers, Bill

4/6/2004
Oops - I mean to say "It was then capoed up to "A" minor." The other read may have been a little confusing.

4/6/2004

4/6/2004
You know I saw a version of Jerusalem ridge that used a similar tuning Bill (maybe just one of the Bs though). It was then capoed up to a minor. I've been working on a versions lately sans capo in A. Sounds really cool and most of the minor notes lay out well.

4/5/2004
To return to the alternative tuning (from High G) topic.

I have been noodling with Crossing the Cumberlands and I detuned both B strings. Is this cheating? Apart from G and D (and Mr Auldridges excursions into G6 and C6) do other contemporary Dobro players play with other tunings? Seems like a few of the old time Hawaiian players really experimented with this!

Just wondering,

Bill

3/28/2004
Trouble here on Miss Sally's site -- never!

3/28/2004
? trouble -- -where?

3/26/2004
uh-oh... could there be a bit 'o trouble brewing for RG?

3/26/2004
I have had a bash with the 4th string to E for G6 on a 6 string. Fun indeed for getting a "traditional swing" steel sound. I have played a little with CEGACE on steel and even C#EGACE.Such wonderful textures. Off reso for a minute. I have always liked Freddy Roulette on 8 an string New Yorker -- really wild. Buy an 8 string ? not enough $ and 6 string still boggles my mind. I did just buy a low D irish whistle though. :-) Bill

3/26/2004
Yeah - Mike uased a C6 for Wave on TGDS. I asked him about that. It's the same relative note layout as the G6, but you need different gauge strings to accomplish it. That's why I'm gonna start with G6. MB

3/25/2004
I heartily agree with you about Mike! He is just the best for that stuff...I haven't experimented much at all with 8-strings, I begin to see double with more than 6... I do really love the sound, you can get a lot of things with that many strings and the G6 tuning that you simply can't with the regular tuning. You can still get cool sounds with just six strings in the 6th tuning though. maybe i should look at a tune with a 6th tuning. I think ( and you may correct me) that Mike used a different type tuning for his tunes on GDS? What a great sound he has!!! Bill don't go gettin' jealous and go out and get one now...... sally

3/25/2004
I should be getting the 8-string in a few weeks. It's a Mike Auldridge Signature Model Beard. Serial #1. I've talked to Mike and a few others and am going to start out with G6. I may eventually switch to C6. The G6 I'll use is what Mike used on 8 String Swing. EGBDEGBD from low notes to high notes. I'm glad Mike is nearby to sit down with when I get it. Who better to teach 8-string dobro than Mike. MB

3/25/2004
You got an 8 string then MB? G6 like Mike A? Do you keep the GBD on the top?

Bill

3/25/2004
Hey Sally - have you ever experimented with 8 strings? MB

3/23/2004
I'm getting really jealous of y'all discussing plans for rgrass in July. Won't be able to make it this year but I know you will have a great time with sally and rob. Bill will be able to teach me everything!!! when he gets back.

have fun dave

3/22/2004
sure does! I have some ideas brewing on how to approach fiddle tunes- actually your sentence about retaining fiddle tune identity hits the nail on the head... hmmmmm, this will bend your mind a bit...

3/22/2004
Fiddle tune rhythm variation / style. I have been listening to lots of celtic rhythms and see opportunity to rework many fiddle tunes as jigs, slip jigs and hornpipes. This bends my mind as well as my fingers. Also, how to retain fiddle tune identity without having to hit every note. Does this make sense? Bill

3/22/2004
Fiddle Tunes - or tunes with lots of changes. MB

3/22/2004
You got it! keep the suggestions flowing any on you for awhile, and I will start tring to work on the formation for the week! I will think about a good celtic air in DADF#AD as well. there are so many good tunes out there to choose from! I think Rob and i will have lots of ideas, things to compare approaches with, that kind of stuff. see you all soon, sally

3/19/2004
I want to get more ideas on back-up and fills. Both you and Rob do amazing rhythm stuff. MB

3/18/2004
Birdlife central on Sally's deck! Sounds wonderful. Again as spring threatens here we have storms forcast for the weekend. And I was hoping to sit in my yard by the stream and paick whilst watching for the 1 local pair of kingfishers. For RG. Improvisation sounds very interesting indeed. DADF#AD stuff would be good -- I love the voice it gives the guitar. Travis picking too? Am I too subversive if I say that some purely celtic tunes would be fun. Whatever we do I know I will depart Lyons a richer man.

Bill

3/17/2004
I am working on some new approaches to improvisation, and hope I will be able to articulate them to you all during the RG week... spring is finally arriving here in colorado, I have been watching the giant golden Eagle above my house fircling almost every day, the weather is reaching into the 70's! and two weeks ago, I had a flock of cedar waxwings in the trees just off my deck. What a treat! If any of you RGrasser folks have ideas of what you would like to do during that week learning wise, post them here, I will also pass them along to robbie as well. should be a great week for us all... bring your rain gear and sunscreen too...sally

3/16/2004
Me - But I guess you knew that Bill. A friend from another Camp Sally did last year (Common Ground) will also be at RG. His Name is Damon Wack and hails from Sunny Florida.

MB

3/10/2004
Been quiet here recently. Who is going to RG academy this year? Maybe I can put some faces to names at last.

Bill

2/26/2004
Dunno about the last post but............ I'm here in Bolton. Hi Sally! Spring threatens to arrive but we've just had some snow today. Looks pretty with some small daffodils peeping through. Speaking of Daffodils -- St Davids day on Monday 1st March. Wear one for the Welsh Celts. Land of my Fathers.

2/26/2004
well today, the 26th, we are up to around 60F- no signs other than the occasional odd bird migratory thing, a little over a week ago, I had a small flock of Cedar Waxwings in the trees off my deck, and I know that they are not normally around here--was great to see them! snow this weekend likely, but the days are longer and there is lots more sun on my deck later in the day... Obviously you are writing from somewhere other than Colorado, so where the heck you writing from?

2/24/2004
Any sign of spring out there in Colorado?

2/5/2004
Did I hear someone talking aboout me?

2/5/2004
Hi Lee! are you coming back to the academy??? i hope so, it was great fun having you here last year! let me know!!! my best, sally

2/3/2004
That's the truth!

Lee

1/29/2004
i am really going to look forward to having you here, should be a blast, glad you found rooming for you and bill, watch out, he is too much fun......sally

1/27/2004
Hey Sally, Michael Barton again. Well I've got my flight booked, and UK Bill and I have our lodging accommodations aranged. No turning back now. See ya at RGrass. Looking forward to it.
