Right Back at ya Sally - just a week late. MB

12/24/2003
Greetings! I know that this is Christmas Eve and most (if not all) of you are with family and loved ones, so why would you be looking at this website? But, just in case you are, I want to wish you all a Very Merry Christmas and the best of fortunes, be they spiritual or otherwise, in the New Year to come. sincerely, Sally

12/18/2003
Hey michael, it would be great to have you there!- it will be a good week, rest assured... if you have any problems, let me know. sally

12/18/2003
Oops - Sorry Sally - It's Michael Barton. I'll be there unless something crazy comes up.

12/17/2003
I think that anyone can sign up, as there is always room to learn from the beginner to the advanced, and i know that Rob and I will be sharing classes, so no worry there! Who sent this email anyway??? Be glad to have you in the class! sally

12/16/2003
I got the scoop from Planet BG. I reserved my spot and hope to make it happen.

12/16/2003
Hey Sally - how structured are the 3 different skill levels at RG Academy. They only show having novice slots left.

12/5/2003
Hi Michael! glad you like the new look, i like it too! you really should try to make it to RG- loads of fun it will be with a lot of great players, some from over the pond are showing up- but maybe you should come to Common Ground this year too??? and a big howdy to David Elias, good ot hear from you- boy your reviews of the window are wonderful! sorry i can't make the lyons gig with you, out here in CA enjoying lots of beautiful rain.... see ya soon, s.

12/4/2003
The new site looks great. I'll have to peruse a little more when I have time. I also enjoyed the retrospective. Hope you have a wonderful holidays season - and I hope to see you next year. That Rockygrass is too tempting with you and Rob - but likely a little too far away for me (we'll see though). Michael Barton

12/4/2003
Hi Sally- great new web site! I thought you were taking it easy out there in Lyons but you've been all around the world ! :) All the best for the holidays and thanks again for your great music. David Elias

12/3/2003
Hi all out there in dobroland- just a quick note to let you know that the website will be taking on a newer, fresher look, hopefully with a few more things to look at, new photos and articles, and should be up tonite or tomorrow.I think you will still find it easy to navigate, and fun to peruse. hope you all had a good Thanksgiving holiday, and a quick note to let you know that Rocky Grass Academy is pretty much sold out, there are just a few spaces left in the dobro class, which this year I am also working with the fabulous Rob Ickes, so we will be having some good times come July 2004! Hope to see many of you there again! My best ,Sally

11/19/2003
Hi Michael, both disks are different from each other- KC's solo is more of a songwriter thing, and she writes great songs, and the Uncle earl is much more an old-time style, you should get them both!! New website look should be up within a week and half or so, around Dec 1 hopefully. Just going for a bit more streamlined look, though much will stay the same. CD is still coming along, i have just been so busy it has had to go on the back burner for a while longer, hoping to get back to it in the late spring. All is well here, just getting colder at nights...see ya this year I hope, sally

11/19/2003
Hey Sally Michael Barton here. As you know, I'm always looking to increase my collection of CDs with you on it. The Uncle Earl and KC stuff is new to me. I was checking out her web paage and both KCs first album (with the all-star cast) and the Unlce Earl one look intriguing. Which one would you say you play more on, or should I just get both. Hope all is well - BTW how are the new website and CD coming along. Bye MB.

11/18/2003
Sally-Thanks, I will check the site. I have to admit that my initial interest in that particular disk was based a)on the assumption that if you produced it then it would be good stuff and b)I wanted to hear what you were playing. The whole thing worked out to be really nice. Keep up the good work. Best,Brad

11/18/2003
oops, accidentally hit submit before i finished the note to you! sorry 'bout that. anyway, i know whe will appreciate your kind words. and thanks for writing in! my regards, sally

11/18/2003
Hi Brad! Glad you liked KC"s Uncle Earl disk- I like it too! If you would like to know more about KC and Uncle earl, her website is wwwl.kcgroves.com

11/18/2003
Hi Brad! Glad you liked KC"s Uncle Earl disk- I like it too! If you would like to know more about KC and Uncle earl, her website is wwwl.kcgroves.com

11/18/2003
Hey, Sally-I've really enjoyed the "Uncle Earl" CD. KC and Jo really do exceptionally well together and the song choices are as good as it gets. I especially liked their performance of "The Orphan Train". Utah Phillips wrote some really haunting stuff with his "Heart Songs" and hearing them do more of his music would be a treat. More, please! As always, the subtle touch of the reso adds greatly to the tune. Best Regards-Brad Carr

11/6/2003
Hi Jim, I don't think I actually met Chet and June, I think my mother did! Or perhaps they met other members of my family in the Chico area! I am glad you liked the recording, I am sure my mother gave them a copy of my record. thanks for writing in1 sincerely, sally

11/5/2003
Sally, Just a short note to see if you remember Chet & June Van Meter from Westwood, Ca. They were my parents and talked of meeting you and your family in Chico, Ca. Mom passed away in 1996 and dad passed away in 200. Among their belongings was a tape of yours given them by someone in your family. I injoyed hearing it. My dad, Chet, was on the Van Meter genology trail and I believe that is how they met you folks. Hope all is well with you and hop to hear from you. Jim Van Meter

11/3/2003
No problem! Thanks for the speedy reply. Our family has learned by playing along with you and the gang; you're part of the family up here in Maine! Thanks again, Glenn from Maine

11/3/2003
Hi Glenn! I don't sell that particular video from my site, but am planning on doing that starting next year. I also am in the planning stages of a new DVD instructional project which I hope to complete by early summer?! So, eventually that will be posted when it is getting close to being finished. thanks for writing in! my best, sally

11/3/2003
Sally, Enjoyed your part in the Bluegrass Jamming DVD I recently purchased for my family. However, I cannot find it on your website. Have you completed any other projects similar to this DVD? Thanks, Glenn from Maine

11/3/2003
I take that back - Randy does give himself credit in the song Narrative - but not the credits portion.

11/3/2003
Dang - That was a quick response. As I listened a little more it seemed like it was you and someone else, but Randy didn't give himself any credit. Very cool tune, with lots of blues licks to pilfer. Not sure about Common Ground yet. Sort of hoping the band starts gigging a lot this summer.

11/3/2003
HI Michael! good to hear from you! Actually, Randy and I sat up in a hotel room around 2-3 a.m. at telluride one night and just tracked that to a little 4-trak (i think it was) ... we were just trading off of each other, so likely we were sharing much of the same rhythm duties- it was great fun to do that! He is a fine player! From what I remember, we just sat there and played until we thought it was done, no fixing, O/D's or anything like that- it is what it is for certain! Again, great to hear from you- will I see you at Common Ground in 2004? Hope so! see ya, sally

11/3/2003
Hey Sally, Michael Barton here. Hope this finds you well. I just got a hold of the "Everything That Slides" CD that Rabdy put out, and your track is great. I was just curious as to whether that was you doing the rhythm track also. I'm assuming you did since there are no other dobro credits for that tune.

10/30/2003
Hi dr richie, welcom to the site! I have been playing slide since the early teenage years, about 27years at this point, tho' that is ageing me with the dinosaurs i do think... I started out on the family guitar, an old old martin 0017, started playing bottleneck, but quickly understood somehow that lap style was much more for me... could get more out of it than upright playing... so then i started playing it lap style, eventually finding a real reso in a pawn shop, this was a prototype of the sandblasted ( carved ) ones, likely from around the 30's, with a top made out of some type of pine, and about an 1/2 inch depth or better, so it had amazing high register tones and, of course, almost no bottom end tones to it at all! but it did the trick... Then I played on a 34 Regal resophonic, with a spruce/mahogany combo, great great guitar; that lasted me for many years, until I found the Scheerhorn, which today for me is still unparalled in excellence. Hang onto that nice old dobro, good idea for the quarterman cone, and save your dough for the next bump up... there are good dobro groups to join, the Resogit list is great, and so is the UK(Britain) list, i think it is called ResoUK.com- if you do a search, you will surely find them as well. Moderated by a great player named Len Harvey. I will be teaching a few dobro camps this next summer, and will be putting up that info very soon onto the site. Nice to hear from you, thanks for writing! my best, sally

10/29/2003
hi sally...love your playing..how long have you been playing..and what kind of dobro did you start with? i am new to the instument but i have a 1938 dobro with a new quarterman cone and bridge. it has a nice voice but does it compare to a clinesmith or sheerhorn? hope to see you some day. dr. richie

10/29/2003
Hi Sally Very cool site! Just thinking of you and wanted to say cograts on your production and playing on the Yonder Mountain String Band/Benny Galloway CD...Totally great.. a must for all us bluegrass/reso freaks! Benny close friend here in Durango now. Your work is an inspiration in all aspects as always, and much more appreciated than you may know. Looking foward to coming back to RG in 2004...always a treat. Let us know if you make it down to our part of the state..Always Bill (from Durango)

10/27/2003
Dear Sally...I learned of your web sight from my son's friend Shane Leftridge. My son Winn Mahuron lives in Broomfield CO. I am a novice Dobro player waiting patiently for my Regal D45 Natural Mahogany Square Neck Resonator Guitar to arrive from Folkmusician.com. ....Musiciansfriend.com back ordered the D45 for two months in a row but I found the mahogany top at Folkmusician.com so I ordered a D45 from them. I like the Lap Dawg Tone bar from Dunlop. I like the Pro Piks and The Goldengate thumb pick. I have viewed Rob Ickes and Jerry Douglas Videos and have listened to Stacy Phillips CD's. I play the Cornet and Harmonica an can read music. I have learned about Harry James Resonator Guitars. Benoit Guitars are beautiful state of the art Resonator Guitars. Please see www.benoitguitars.com...hope to learn some tecniques from your experiences playing the Dobro also. Sincerely, Jimmy G. 9/25/2003
Been quiet on here recently. You Rockygrass 2003 people out there lurking? Still having fun here picking in DADF#AD I keep returning to the pick blocking exercises too (I know what you mean Anders!)-- trying to do it at any speed is so hard at the moment! Anyone fancy Rockygrass 2004? It's a long way from here but it was such great fun this year that I should do it again before I reach 35! :-0 My very best to all

Bill

9/10/2003
Hi dennis! I too had a great time at Swannanoa- what a wonderful place to be when you are going to a music camp! Thank you for the words of encouragement as well- I really do love teaching. I am indeed working on a new solo project- this one will take some time, but time I have! hope to see you again, I know that I will be teaching a few music camps next year, and I will be sure to post them as they get confirmed around the first of the year, till then, my best, sally

9/9/2003
Hi Sally, I received the tab book. Thanks. Now all I have to do is remember to feed the cat and take breaks for sleeping. Swannanoa was a blast. You are a great teacher; I came away greatly inspired (still) on reso and with music in general. The classes were the perfect mix of grinding it out note for note, tablature, and watching/listening to you play. Thanks for your helpful comments on my playing. Hope to hear/see you again (another CD would be nice!). Dennis

9/9/2003
Hi Billy! How are you? Long time no see, hope you are still playling lots of reso guitar? I just cam e across the fotos of the deer in your yard you sent to me a while back! hoe i see you sometime in the near future! sally

9/9/2003
Hi Sally, long time no see! I just heard about your web page. It is nice. Billy Gilbert

9/6/2003
Hello out there! A quick note to let you all know that I am aware of the problem with the new tablature piece- For some reason, I sent it as a tiff to the webmaster, and for some other reason, it does not fully appear- I promise that we will fix that as soon as possible! Am also working on a new tablature piece to be put up within the next few weeks! Also, there are new photos going up weekly that are photos of Rocky Grass Academy class 2003- we had a blast! see ya round! sally

8/24/2003
Sally,

How many beats per minute for "Crossing the Cumberlands"?

Also, what is your 2004 schedule for workshops?

Hope you are well, doug

8/19/2003
Hey there Anders, congratulations on winning the band contest! That is great! You know the pick-blocking thing will eventually start to be second nature. I promise! And hello to Michel Jansen- how the heck are you? for those of you who don't know Michel, he is a wonderful dobro/slide player from Holland. Michel, someday I hope to make it back to Holland, though the bookings don't seem to be in that area for me these days, however; I will likely be in England again in June of 2004 on tour for a week or two maybe with another good slide player and songwriter who goes by the name of Johnny Dickinson. He has a website, www.johnnydickinson.com----- you should all check it out! in the meantime, Michel write again, or give me a call to say hello, wanna hear what you have been up to for the last year or so. And Anders, keep up the good work! my best, sally

Hey Sally and the Rockygrass 2003 Crew! Anders here. I miss you guys. Sally, i just wanted to thank you again for a great week up there in Lyons. I've been practicing a lot, trying to digest all the info recieved. arghhhh... pick-blocking. The great week was capped of by my band, The Broke Mountian Bluegrass Band winning the band contest! We're really excited, there was some stiff competition. Take care Sally and everybody else--- Anders

8/18/2003
Hi Sally :)

Just found your new website. Looks great! Hope all is well

I just did a great Country/rockabilly festival with a Canadian bass player/singer called Ronny Hayward in Toulouse France. Was great to introduce the dobro to the rockabilly crowd :) they loved it!

Lets keep in touch and mail soon

Warm greetings and a great big hug from Holland

Michel

8/18/2003
"Idlers" is one of those tunes that I keep returning to periodically. It's a wonderful tune but I feel like I am wrestling my guitar when I play it. I miss Lyons.

Bill

8/16/2003
hey Michael, you are correct in saying that " Idlers of Belltown" , which is the actual tune of the medley you are referring to , was a bear to not only learn, but to record as well... i almost bit off more than i could chew at the time, but Jerry was good at just making me not give up! Hope all is well with you out there! my best, sally

8/15/2003
BTW - That was me on the Damien Miley post below.

Michael

8/15/2003
Hey Sally. Been workin hard on Damien Miley ever since you played it for me at Common Ground. Pretty much have it down (not up to speed though). I knew I was playing a few things in the wrong place, but then I got DWs DVD and that cleared it all up. What a great tune. It must have been a bear working it up on reso from guitar.

8/13/2003
thanks Lee, I had such a great time at the academy this year, lots of old friends and some new ones too! I am still in recovery from three weeks of teaching, but am managing to be able to speak coherently again. Each year, I manage to learn something new from my students, and have lots of fun learning alongside all of you who attend! I hope to be able to have an even more special class next year, stay tuned for the details! sally

8/12/2003
No Bill...it wasn't me, but since you bring it up:

Rockygrass academy -- awesome! Sally - you are the best.

Lee

8/12/2003
Hi sally, thanks for a great class at Rockygrass this year. Your class was both informative , inspirational and a bit of a giggle too. Bill and me felt right at home and the rest of the class sure helped to make it a fun time, thanks to you all and I hope to see some of you again, maybe next year at Rockygrass or maybe at our bluegrass camp over here in the UK (Sore Fingers Summer School) All the best. Dave Currie (scotland)

8/7/2003
Thanks for the resources, Sally. I'll probably try to get my chops up a bit more before I subject others to my playing! (My 7-year-old son ran out of the room the other night going, "Not the dobro again!" Maybe I'll get some bagpipes and show him what real torture is.) But I'll team up soon enough. I do like McHattie's Waltz alot too, and Rob does have a sweet tone. I love that album because it really showcases such a huge range of tones and styles. The Jobim piece that Mike Auldridge plays is a real eye-opener for anyone who thought dobro was just for country or bluegrass. And I've already got down most of Gene Wooten's version of Day Tripper. Yeah! I'm keeping my eye on your calendar page, but do you plan to be in the Northeast anytime soon? (e.g., NY state?) I sure hope I can come hear you play sometime. Thanks again for the encouragement and advice. All best, Matt

8/6/2003
PS- there is also the UKResguit list with some really good players to connect with as well in the UK!

8/6/2003
Hi Matt the Square Neck Yankee, welcome to the wonderful world of resophonic! The guy who wrote Great Swason Waltz goes by the name of Slavek Hanslik, and is one of my favorite guitar composers. He didn't intend this piece for slide guitar, but when I was looking for something special in the way of a waltz, this one just leapt out to me and said " I am the tune you need to play for the Great Dobro Sessions". I am really happy I could find a tune like that-- to me it was not only about melody, but tone as well. I think the same thing can be said for McHatties Waltz, the waltz that Rob Ickes recorded. Thank you for such a nice compliment- in some ways, actually most ways, I feel like it is the instrument itself that helps me to sing as well. I do consider it my real voice, especially on the slow ones. If you are looking for other dobro players to commune with, a great place to go might be the resoguit list, I am not sure of the URL address, but if you do a search, you are most likely to find them. There are some great folks out there to connect with! Thanks again, sincerely, Sally

8/5/2003
Hi Sally--I'm new to the dobro (I can play anything as long as it's slow and in G!)--also play a little guitar, mando, and banjo. I've been trying to immerse myself in the landmark dobro recordings, and to that end I recently bought The Great Dobro Sessions. Over my lifetime I have listened to music in countless genres, and I must say that Great Season Waltz is one of the most beautiful pieces I've ever heard. I don't know if the composer wrote it with the dobro in mind, but the way you play it I can't imagine it any other way. I'm very much looking forward to listening to more of your music--you really make the instrument sing. Thanks a bunch--Matt the Squareneck Yankee

7/29/2003
hi to all of you out there, sally here. In NC at the moment at the Swannanoa Gathering, another fine camp, with great pickers and beautiful campus... I had a great time with all of you at this year's Academy, and would like to sincerely thank all of you for putting up with me and my tactics...You all worked really hard, (played really hard during the evenings as well!) and i had a really fun time with you all. A special thanks to Bill Dalton and David and Diane Currie, who came over the pond from Bolton England and Glasgow Scotland, respectively, It was great to have you here! When I get home next week, A promise to all to get off the couch potato sofa and put up some new tab for you all to download. Also, all those who weren't able to get the solo transcription/CD stuff, due to that i couldn't really get to the printer that week, I will be going to the printer as soon as i get home. so then would be a good time to let me know that you need one- or just want one! hope you are all having a great summer, I am in heaven here at Swannanoa, due to the fact the there is a great Hawaiin Slack Key guitarist named Patrick Lendanza here, and he has offered to teach and play some with me!!! in the meantime, off to hear the student concert! my best to you always, sally

7/28/2003
There must be more of you guys from Rockgrass academy out there? Who posted the last mesage and didn't sign it?

Lee --- was that you?

Sally's class was, as always, superb. Shame I have to go home tomorrow.

Cheers,

Bill

7/27/2003
Rockygrass academy -- awesome! Sally - you are the best.

7/4/2003
OH! P.S. - I also recieved a phone call from Planet Bluegrass, they have decided to open up two-three more spaces in the Banjo and the Dobro classes, and the tickets for that go on sale FIRST THING Monday Morning, so for those of you who are interested, check out my calendar for the Planet Bluegrass link, and you can go from there!

7/4/2003
Hi all out there in dobro land! I have a correction for the Swannanoa Gathering Music Camp dates: the Contemporary Guitar Week is actually July 27- August 1, 2003. I just talked with the director of the camp, and would like to let you know that there are still a few spaces left in all the classes and if you are looking for a wonderful, community -oriented, friendly and inspiring camp to newly learn, or just plain old hone your skills as a player, this is a very good camp to attend! In the calendar part of the website, there is a web address for you all to click on if you are interested. In the meantime, I have been very busy, but am planning on putting up some more photos, and some new tablature within the next three weeks, so sorry I haven't had time to put anything new up for you, but you know how it goes? The Telluride Festival with the Boomchicks was great fun. and there will hopefully be some fotos for that as well as the touring of England and the Sore Fingers Summer Music School, which as usual was great fun and I am still sleepy from the late nights there at the pub! Hope you are all having a good July 4th Independence weekend, stay safe and sane, my best, sally

7/3/2003
which tunes are you playing?

7/2/2003

I AM AN INTERMEDIATE DOBRO PLAYER. i HAVE PLAYED SOME OF YOUR SONG THAT WERE IN THE GREAT DOBRO SESSIONS. ED STOVER

7/1/2003
Hi EK, playing with JK was indeed lots of fun, and because he is the musician he is, it made it pretty easy to play his music. He just has lots of soul, and that is always the direction i point my compass in. If you are interested in dobro camps, i will be teaching two coming up ( besides Rocky grass)- next week is the Common Ground workshop in Baltimore MD, and the first week of August is a great workshop called the Swannanoa Gathering near Asheville NC- their web address is www.swangathering .com-- check it out! in the meantime, thank you for the good words, keep on keepin on! sally

7/1/2003
Hey Sally, I heard you with Jorma Kaukonen at McCabes receintly (for the first time) and couldn't believe how fantastic you played his material--like it was your own! Why can't I do that? I am studying with Mike Witcher and occasionally with Rob Ickes when I come across him. Nothing is better than attending an academy of dobro! I just discovered your workshop at, is it RockyGrass. Sold out. Mabey next year. I love your playing, and can't wait to meet you and take some lessons one day! It is great to meet another woman player too! Thanks for the music--E.K. Waller

6/20/2003
wow, I don't know what to say except thank you, your words really DO mean lots- slide has been my lifelong best friend and passion, so I can understand what the feeling of slide is like for many people. Again, thank you, and at some point, I will put a reference /material type article for all of you who are looking for where some great inspiration can be found with other players as well. Hope that you continue down the slidy road, it only gets better as the years roll by! much thanks, sally

6/19/2003
Hello Sally

I heard you playin on a little session on radio 4 BBC UK a few weeks back. Such a short session sadly but it stuck with me. It was so full of character and now one of my old guitars has a jacked up action and does as a temporary lap slide. Im hooked and glad that many years of guitar playing is helping me slowly adapt to a new set of rules, positions and sounds. all down to hearing your beautiful style.

thanks and best wishes

Len uk Looking out for your cd's too.

6/6/2003
Hi Mark, thank you for such kind words! why don't you send an email to me from my website, I think you can find the email address somewhere on one of the site pages, likely the contact page, and when i receive your email, I will get back to you with lots of ideas, etc. I am getting lots of emails from folks who heard the BBC Radio 4 show! I will plan on coming to tour England again next year, again with my pal Johnny Dickinson, so hopefully I will meet you at one of the shows1 So, send me an email and I will get back to you ASAP! thanks again, sally-- PS- One of my favorite lap slide players, and soon likely to be yours too, is a guy named Kelly Joe Phelps, who tomorrow flies to the UK to do a series of dates in the UK, his web site is www.kellyjoephelps.com- you should check it out and go to at least one of his shows for very inspirational playing...

6/5/2003
Hi Sally, I am a guitarist from England. I heard your feature on BBC Radio 4 and love your playing. I am interested in learning how to play this style of guitar, I mainly play blues/rock and celtic stuff in DADGAD tuning. Can you suggest any reference material (recordings, tuition books etc.) to start with? Of course I will be buying your cds and books! Many thanks for the beautiful music. Mark.

5/29/2003

Saw Peter Woodman at the Manchester guitar show yesterday. Nice to see reso guitars in a sea of electric madness! Some cool guitars - and an outstanding reso bass!

Back to the ward tomorrow until next weekend I hope. Maybe another 2 to 3 weeks and I may get parole.

Are you being kind to Lennie? I hope so! Have a safe journey home -- catch you soon with those photos I promised!

Any guestbook readers that are interested in silly photos of Sally taken by an anonymous friend at the Sore Fingers School -- just post a message. I may send them to Sally's webmaster before they go to Sally?

Don't get too paranoid now my dear!

Bill xxx

4/20/2003
Hi to all out there, sally here, just checking in to say a quick hello and to let you know that the Sore Fingers Music Camp in Chipping Norton, England was a great success for all, and want to extend the many thanks to the kind directors and staff and students who make it feel so worthwhile to travel over the pond to teach. I had great students, all of them willing to work very hard to bring out their best in dobro, and were all great fun to hang with after the classes were done for the day. When I get home next month, i will put up photos and a little story for you all to peruse.see you down the road! My best, Sally

Sally you are the best.

lots of love, linda

Hello Sally: This note is from Dave Johns. How are you doing? From the looks of the website, it looks like you're doing just fine. I found your site when I was checking out the Open Road site. I'm going to see them tomorrow in Chico at Moxie's. I've heard them at Wolf Mtn. the past couple of years and really like what I hear. It was a treat to hear Ed Neff with them two summers ago.

Shelley and I are still doing our little swing band, Porch Swing, and both of us are in the Quincy Big Band; she's the girl singer and I play rhythm on a '49 Super 400. We do all the typical standards from the 30's and 40's. It's a workout on guitar. Our home e-mail is: smj@inreach.com Take care, Dave Johns

3/15/2003
Hi Mike.....how many years now have i owed you that money??? check is in the mail...how are you????

Howdy Sally...

Looking forward to RG...I need it bad! Any word on who's the assistant yet? Hope you got the suggestion I emailed you about Witcher. I had a long talk with Spencer on the phone today and we were getting each other fired up!

Great you're working on a CD and a new book! I emailed Happy Traum a while back and suggested he talk to you about doing an advanced dobro video...give that some thought and call Happy.

Enjoy your trip over the pond!

Hi Steve, where is "here"? Because if you are in England, i will indeed be doing a few dates over there, post- Sore Fingers camp. I will be putting up the dates on the site sometime soon. How did you get a copy of the PHC show? I would love a copy of that on disk (hint, hint) and am not sure where to find one... Anyway, thanks for the really nice words, and compliments, I can always use those thoughts for fuel... NOTE: for those of you who have been hearing, via other websites, that I have ordered another custom Scheerhorn, well, shoot, that just ain't the truth... Funny how rumours start! Someday i will contemplate another amazing guitar from Tim, but not in the real near future. In the meantime, again , thank you all for keeping in touch, I will hope to see some of you down the touring road this summer! my best, sally

2/28/2003
Hi Sally really big fan of yours. A friend in Georgia sent me a tape of your appearance on the "Prairie home companion" and your wonderful playing just stunned me.I tracked down your cd via the internet and have just about worn it out! I see that you are teaching at a workshop in the Cotswald in April,a real shame it is for musicians only because I would just love to sit and listen to your magic worked on the Resophonic, maybe you will do some shows over here on day soon. I shall keep checking and hoping thanks for the music Steve Young

2/27/2003
Hi all, Sally here, wanted to let you all know that my email program went on the fritz for the last two weeks or so, but now managed to get back on track! Thanks for all your letters! It has been a busy few weeks, lots of projects coming up! I will be going to England in April, to teach at a great music camp called Sore Fingers. You would be surprised at how many dobro players there are in England! Then I will be doing a few gigs while there, and taking some much needed time to travel into Scotland for a few days of isolation, or near isolation, in the Western Highlands, right on the oceanside, where i can write, and go hiking and birding. I am also beginning production for the newest Yonder Mountain String Band release, in March. Off to Jorma's camp to teach in the first weekend of April, then just keeping busy for the rest of the summer. We will keep you all informed of the schedule as it all becomes confirmed. The Boomchicks are back at Telluride, with a few nice surprises this year. Not as many guests as in the past, but still have a few things up our sleeves... For those folks that have ordered solo transcription books, i am currently printing up more, as I ran out of them, and will get them out to you as soon as they are finished. I can't seem to keep up with it! Thank you for all the interest! And, hopefully soon, there will be some new tab up on the site to download for free, just trying to find time to finish that up also. Hope to see some of you down the road this summer, thanks for keeping in touch! My best, sally

2/18/2003
Hi Sally! I just started playing dobro this fall and I signed up for your workshop at Rockygrass. I'm practicing a lot but hoping I'll be up to speed for the "intermediate" level. I just ordered your solo transcriptions book to work on. Is there anything else you can suggest for me to prepare? I'm very excited for the academy and happy to have found a female dobro role model! Deb, Ft. Collins, CO

2/16/2003
Sore Fingers gets closer -- I just surfed on in and thought I would say hello. Not a Dobro player myself (mandolin) but your class last year seemed to have a great time bar none (is that a Dobro pun :( ?) . Good Luck

2/15/2003
hi sally, looks like you've been busy.thought you might like a blast from the past.[but then again maybe not,ha ha?]best wishes from layne and melissa. walkers10us@yahoo.com

2/12/2003
Hey hey, Sally! Evelyn and I moved last year to Santa Fe, and your name keeps popping up, so I thought I'd check to see if I could find you on the internet, and here you be! If you're ever out this way (I hear tell you're in CO these days) let us know. We're on the board of the Southwest pickers, the equivalent of the ol' CBA here in NM. Drop us a line!

Lance & Evelyn lance@lgcad.com

2/4/2003
Thanks for the reply Sally. I'll see if I can make some waves down here and point them your way.

Teaching Camps for Dobro ... I wish! Dobro is a curiosity, used for the odd fill in here and there. Mainly pedal steel here. I guess you play whatever gets you gigs, sad but true.

Looking forward to getting a copy of your CD.

OzMaz

2/2/2003
Hi there, nice to hear from you! No plans to visit Australia, tho' that would be great fun! How does one get a chance to come there as a musician, any ideas? will be in England, but that unfortunately will be the closest I can get! do they have any teaching camps there? the current recording project is definitely not bluegrass, but still acoustic, with some great players sitting in and solid material, lots of slide and some singing too! keep in touch! my best, sally

2/1/2003
Hi Sally,

I'm back again with a question: Any plans to visit Australia?

OzMaz

2/1/2003
Hi Sally, I really enjoyed your first solo CD and am looking forward to your second. I'm glad the focus is 'off' Bluegrass, life's too short to play just one style.

1/29/2003
Hi Sally!! We hope you come visit in Santa Fe again soon! Kevin, Stacey, and Sarah

1/22/2003
Hi all, nice to see a few new notes up on the board! Leroy, I am just going to admit that I am not sure who is writing to me? let me know via the board, and I will try to get back to you! And Carol, I didn't know you painted, that is cool! I will look forward to seeing the painting! I too have been doing a lot of painting, and having a great time learning lots about oil paint... too fun! keep in touch! Well, it is really really chilly tonite here in Colorado, around 10F- finished snowing, but feels like there is a bit of a wind chill going on. All is well, keep the faith, sally

1/21/2003
Hey Sally! Listening to your music and lovin it! I play a dobro too....looking to find a fes new licks in your music :o)....Keep up the good work and write me. Oh boy...how I could brag if I got mail from you.lololol WAITING! Leroy

1/20/2003
I've been doing a little painting for you, but I'm not happy with the results yet. Sure enjoyed seeing you again last fall and hope to see you again very soon. Hope the new year is great for you. Carol

1/6/2003
Thanks for the response. Sound like to really neat projects. I enjoy the D tuning stuff. I have been doing a good bit of it lately with my Weissenborn style guitar made by Paddy Burgin in NZ. I especially like Into the Canyon. I have it down pretty well, but some of the pickin still gets me, and I accidentaly skip a note here and there to avoid getting out of time. Take care. MB.

1/5/2003
hello to MB in DC - thanks for the note! It indeed was quite a year. I am currently working (slowly) on another solo project, have been for the last year or so & plan on trying to finish it in May to have out in September or so. That is if all goes according to plans! It is not a bluegrass record, though i want to do another bluegrass recording that is more traditional. This is more like what comes from me spiritually, what really makes me like to play slide these days. There are some really pretty tone pieces in DADF#AD, some Irish air type tunes, and now i am getting ready to record songs that i like from songwriter friends who write the words so well.- things like that. In regards to the next instructional book I am working on currently, I hope to have that done in March or thereabouts. This book is less about solo transcriptions and more about how to be musical with slide guitar. Lots of workshop type things in it that covers soloing, back-up, tone, phrasing, timing, etc- essentially how I run all my workshops. I think it will be pretty useful to any player level except advanced players as they are all pretty well there by this point! I will send out some type of announcement when it is fresh off the press. Thank for you taking the time to drop a line! sincerely, sally

1/5/2003
Hi Sally. I enjoyed your retrospective. Sounds like quite a year. I'm curiosu about the next solo recording you made reference to. Any ideas on when it will be done. Also curious about what your next instructional book will be. I've really enjoyed Solo Transcriptions.

Take care MB in DC mbarton@gateshudson.com

First, Sally has added a 2002 retrospective. To find it, go to the home page and look for the link midway down the page. Next, there is a tab for "Groundspeed" on the tab page. Finally, there are a whole bunch of new 2002 photos in the Photos section. Click the Photos tab above to view them.

Also, the calendar is now back up to date with some 2003 music camp dates: Fur Peace Ranch Camp, Sore Fingers, Rockgrass and the Swannanoa Gathering.

Hi Sally...

Looking forward to Rockygrass Academy next year...I met Ranger Rick last year when I was out there...he was definitely enthusiastic about that G6 tuning...I played his dobro and discovered that 6th note and couldn't believe he'd been grassing it up so well with that swingy note in there! Seemed like a nice guy.

Been having trouble trying to email you...drop me a note at lee@dixieliner.com

CU!

12/3/2002
hi John, great to hear from you. what a name for a band!!! your brother has my email addy, get it from him and write again to say hello! For all those who have been writing in their suggestions regarding offering some dobro tab for you to download, it is on it's way! i have figured out how to copy and paste from a PC format tab format program into the website, so their should be a notice and some tab up soon, hope you all had a great holiday with loved ones, it is feeling very wintry today, almost too cold to snow here in colorado, and even the birds are shivering! I will be posting some new camp dates by next week for all you pickers to peruse. I will be at Rocky Grass Academy, Swannanoa Gathering and Fur Peace Ranch Camps in 2003- hope to see some of you at some of those camps! down the road, sally

12/3/2002
Hi Sally, Nice webpage, hope to hear you play again soon. I'm in a country punkish band called the Asskickers. The singer is a fearless writer as you can tell by the name. Cheers doll, John LaPado

12/1/2002
Hello to all again so soon. It is with a sad heart that i must pass on the news of the passing of a dear friend, beloved soundman and musician as well. Frank Edmundson was known to so many musicians as a more than generous spirit, who so lovingly gave his time to us. Many will know Frank from his days as the soundman for Hot Rize, most recently his work with Alison Kraus and Union Station. He was a fantastic soundman, ALWAYS had a smile for everyone, even when the going would get rough. There were so many times when Frank would come up to us and say, "Since I'm here, why don't I do your sound for you"? He was a great soul with a warm heart. It was a blessing to have had Frank in this lifetime as a friend. He was my favorite redhead, God Bless You, we will all miss you forever Frank, s.

11/29/2002
"Ranger" Rick Bradstreet, 48, the dobro player for the Bluegrass Patriots, died Tuesday, November 26, 2002 peacefully at his home of congestive heart failure. I knew Rick Bradstreet as a fine and friendly soul. He was always supportive of all us dobro players, and was a great player. I always found it amazing that he played in a non-dobro tuning, (he played in an open 6th tuning) but could still nail the Josh Graves stuff to the point. No mistaking what a wonderful and soulful player he was. He, and his playing, will be missed by us all. Rest in Peace Rick--maybe you can hang out with Charles Sawtelle and have a mighty bluegrass band up there with him!

Sally

P.S.--There is a fine obituary on the Patriots' web site (www.bluegrasspatriots.com) and also a forum for those of you who knew Rick to share your thoughts.

11/28/2002
hi all, geez how nice to hear from you all! i will get your requests straight to the webmaster for this site, let him know that you are having difficulties with the ordering, i do have books ready to go, so this monday i will get on it for you all, i promise. One thing about offering up some tab for the site to download from is that the program i currently use for writing tablature is called wintab, for PC only, and i use a mac, which does not support the format, plus on my PC, the program itself does not let me save and send somehow. Is there anyone out there in dobro land who knows a program that supports MAC format? i would love to hear from anyone - i check this forum every other day or so, so if you have any information, i would love to know about it! The WinTab program just does not let me save and send out. it will only let me save and print- i may soon acquire a scanner for my mac, that is a possibility, but boy oh boy would i love to just save and send to the site for you all. So, any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated! I did try the download for AcuTab stuff, but again, this doesn't seem to work either. I will keep persevering for you. my best, sally

11/28/2002
tab on the site would be cool. buy the book too! wonderful tunes to learn and wrestle with. How about tab for some old standards first? U-Bend

11/28/2002
we love you hubcap guitar girl.

happy holiday

11/28/2002
I have been trying to get your instructional book and CD. I came to the web site and filled out all info. I was then sent e-mail to finish completion of order. The call letters attached to web address http to confirm order seems to not be accessible to web TV. In any case, I got a friend who has a computer to try and order from the website and he kept getting errors. I have tried going to Amazon.com to order the book. No luck. I really want the book and cd. I love your work. Any help you can give me in getting the book and cd would be greatly appreciated.

timjojo@webtv.net

11/26/2002
hello slideman, i think that is a great idea to put up some tab offerings for folks to download for free, i will get to work on that very soon! if you have suggestions for the type of tab you would like to see, just send another letter to the forum and i will check in every other day or so to get the suggestions. We have been kind of letting things settle down for a while on the site, for various reasons, one of them being that i have been really really busy and another reason is there has been some serious spamming going on on this page, so we have been trying to lay a little lower for just a bit. Sorry if that has annoyed anyone out there. If anyone else has a friendly! suggestion or two about things you would like to see on the website, please let me know via this forum and I will see what we can do to please you all! Also, for those out there who read Jerry Douglas' bulletin board, yes, I did hear about The Comment, and I would like to thank all the kind friends and fans who said such supportive things about me. It does not go unnoticed and unappreciated. Thank you! It again has been a blessing of a year for many musicians, we have all been working steadily and happily, and who can ask for more?I hope you all have a wonderful and happy Thanksgiving holiday. sincerely, the girl who plays dobro, that strange guitar with the hubcap!

11/25/2002
Sally, Great sound, first heard you when the sound guy at a festival played your album at the end of a concert after everyone else had gone home, as 'music to collect seats to'. just logging on to get my own copy all the best, Paul Baker paul.baker@telco4u.net

11/23/2002
Try putting some tablature for new people (or licks) to increase interest in your website.Give them a reason to return to your site regularly.Slideman1939@AOL.com

hi again, the bottom line was a really fun show, albeit a debut show with Jorma. Boy was i more than a bit nervous, new music for the amazing JK fans, and they were more than welcoming to the newcomers (barry and me). thanks for all the nice thoughts, glad you liked the new stuff, I know that this is music that JK has always appreciated and loved from the heart, I know he appreciates your words too! In response to the previous letter, yes, I have indeed been producing some bands out here in colorado, the main one being the incredible Open Road Bluegrass Band. I produced their first two recordings, the latter being picked up by Rounder! You can check out their website, www.openroadbluegrass.com Drop them a line, they would love to hear from you! They have a great website, complete with MP3 files, photos, all kinds of fun things. another band i produced for here in colorado is the Yonder Mountain String Band. The recording i worked on is called "Elevation"- check it out, they are a great band that now tours and headlines nationally. anyway, that is it for now, again, thanks for the thoughts! my best, sally van meter

I am looking forward to seeing some of you all there! down the road again, sally

Hi! My son-in-law is Ivan Guernsey and he said you play excellent resophonic guitar. If he says so, I believe it because he is also a great player. If you come to KY, we will come and see you. Janet White

Still enthralled with the performance at the Fillmore and the opportunity to meet Jorma. I have new respect for G.E. as well! For someone that phenomenal to be a real fine human being is indeed most welcome. Thanks, G.E.!! Been listening to my old(?) Hot Tuna albums and Airplane LPs and have been wondering why they were collecting dust....Wanna let you know, dear sister, that life is getting better all the time. Going out with another old flame from high school, and there is no baggage involved.. just wit, intelligence and smoochin'. Nothing serious (of course, that's what makes it fun!!)Thank you for a wonderful( and eloquent) "newsletter". You were cool when you saw Little Richard! I stood at attention on the left side of the stage in Redding and held a proper salute until B.B.King saw me a smiled recognition from 25 years ago when I had iced tea and conversation with him for a half hour in the Casino Cabaret at Harrah's. I know how you feel! Acknowledgement is something indeed...Best regards to Jorma. He has always been in my "top 10".

Hi Sally, Let me first thank you for sharing your God given talents with the rest of the world. Caught the show at the Bearsvile theater near Woodstock New York. My husband was/is a huge Tuna fan and admittedly so when we were first together I had to ask "who is Hot Tuna?" and "have I heard anything they've done?" (I'm 36 he's 46) We as the story goes, wanting to share in what my soul mate loves I did my homework and got turned onto Jorma's music and life's story. Back to YOU.... You are awesome! I've been further turned onto a music which this suburbia New England gal had no previous exposure to ever! Wow! I love it! I was totally in awe of the three of you playing some soulful, beautiful, honest music! Blessings on those talented digits of yours and Thanks again, hope to catch another show of yours! Catherine Jean Rieder (Ladybugcjr@aol.com)

Hi all out there in webland... just want to say a quick thank you for all the nice thoughts. We are somewhere in Illinois, on our way to pittsburgh, PA to play on the 11th. a few answers for the kind folks who wrote in these last few days: TERRI- I will try to find some time before the show to hang with you. We are leaving immediately after the show to head north, so won't have time after the show unfortunately. ALEX: the name of the self penned tune is actually 'Into the Canyon", really glad you liked it, and the show was fun wasn't it. It is really wonderful to play with Jorma, i am learning many new things to play, and getting a real chance to stretch my musical legs if you will! MOM--- hi there! well that is all for now, hope to see some of you at Rocky Grass Festival, which i understand is fully sold out! that is great for the Planet Bluegrass folks who put on all those wonderful festivals- they really know how to treat their loyal festivarians! see ya down the road1 my best, sally

Hello, Sally. I just wanted to sign on and tell you how much I enjoyed both shows last night (Sat) at McCabe's. Thanks for signing the Dobro photo. BTW, your "Weissenborn" sounded amazing after you unplugged and went with just the mike. We need another album from you!

I'm referring, of course, to Sally's performance last night in support of Jorma Kaukonen at McCabe's in Santa Monica. Sally and mandolist G.E. Smith joined Jorma for two shows to promote Jorma's current "Blue Country Heart" album. They played all the songs from the country-blues album, plus a few gems from the Airplane / Tuna repetoire including "Embryonic Journey", "Good Shepherd", and "San Francisco Blues." Sally also played her hauntingly beautiful original song, "Into The Valley" (I hope I have that title right Sally).

Although they hadn't played together that much, the musical skills of these three performers made it seem as if they were longtime musical friends. It was a refreshing step back into a bygone era. I highly recommend that you catch this show if it comes to a venue near you.

Thanks again Sally, and Jorma, and G.E. for a wonderful evening of music and fun.

Hi Sally, Just wanted to say "hi!." We moved from Arizona to Missouri, so life got real busy this past year and we missed attending Rockygrass Academy/Festival. Let us know if you're in the area. take care, David Currey (Rockygrass Academy, Class of 2000)

Jane-

Thanks for coming by the site and for your message. I checked with Sally, and she confirmed that she is playing all of the dates listed on this site. There are some other dates where she's not playing, and Cindy Cashdollar will be playing with Jorma instead. For a full listing of all of Jorma's dates, check his site at www.jormakaukonen.com.

Ben O'Connor Webmaster

6/18/2002
Sally, is my understanding correct that you will ONLY be playing on those dates that are asterisked on your tour with Jorma? I checked the Fillmore schedule and you weren't listed as playing.

We missed you at the California Bluegrass Association Camp this year, but we (including a bunch of your students from last year) had a lovely time with Michael Witcher. I keep waiting for you to come back to No. Cal. so I can take lessons!

Jane McKendry

Hi Sally, you were great at the Bottom Line w/ Jorma. Both shows were great !! It was great for you to talk to Tom and I outside before the show. It looked like you were having a lot of fun up there. By the way, did you get the Viagra for that mike stand :-)

Edwin Nettleton, FPR alumni, see you next year at FPR hopefully.

Hi Sally, it's your estranged student Matt Boersma. Nice web site! Since this is a public forum, I'll be glad to butter you up. I *really* appreciate everything you taught me on banjo and guitar, and about old-time and bluegrass music in general. You got me restarted on a life of music. I'm still clawhammering in Boulder and will miss you at the Crystal Meadows old-time festival, but I'm sure you'll be having fun with Jorma. Peace and love, Matt.

5/17/2002
Hello Sally This is Janne Chandler & Joseph Micketti .We are still in Ashland Or. We miss you. And would love to hear from you. Where are you living and how is life? I hope all is well and you are smiling. Love to you and yours Joseph e-mail chandler@mind.net

Wow -- multi instrumentalist !

The boys were thinking of something a little - well - more imposing. I'd like to see a castanet audition though -- challenging !

Any other suggestions ?

Oh -- we already have a banjo player thankyou !

Mr Richard U Bend

5/14/2002
sally here, now, now, i don't anticipate anyone writing anything out of order, it is just a kind of protection from folks who post things of a obscene? nature... it has indeed happened before, so fear not, we are not big brother, just helping to keep it friendly and open... hey u-bend, how about a tambourine??? accordian??? castanets???

5/14/2002
As a new musician - (aspiring to mediocrity really) - I was honoured when Sally offered to play with my band at next years camp concert. One problem -- the rules say that she cannot play her first instrument.

Fellow SVM surfers -- any suggestions on what you would think as a suitable instrument for her to play ? And an audition piece of course !!

We still love you Sally,

Mr U Bend

5/14/2002
As if someone would post something offensive here ! Nice to know that you and Ben will censor anything out of order !

5/14/2002
Thanks everyone for your participation in the guestbook. I just wanted to say that it is indeed moderated (by me). I don't anticipate any problems with offensive posts, but Sally and I have the option to remove a post if necessary. Also, since it's a public forum, please be careful about posting personal information such as real names, email addresses and phone numbers. You can email Sally directly at sally@sallyvanmeter.com.
