Letter From the Road

July 15, 2002

7/15/02
Greetings to you all! I know I have been promising some tour entries for you all to check out on the site, and of course, have had a dickens of a time finding the time to just sit and put it all together for you! But I think now is a good time to send my best to you and to thank some kind folks for all the caring and generosity shown to us on this tour. A big thank you to Jason Greenberg, and Bob, the kindest regards for the photos and the cds! and thank you to all how take the time to write in and say hello! And to Paulie, our tech, who has taught me that it is okay to let someone carry your rig

6/17/02
Hello to you all, arrived tonight in Boston, MA for the House of Blues show with Jorma Kaukonen and Barry Mitterhoff; just finding a few spare minutes to say hello and to thank you all for taking the time to drop a line or two in the guest forum! There is a lot to tell about life on the road this month. As many of you know by now, Barry Mitterhoff and I were asked to tour with the wonderful Jorma Kaukonen for his new folk/country blues release on Columbia Records, Blue Country Heart. We having been having a great time, playing for sold out venues like the Painted Bride in Philadelphia, the Bottom Line in NYC, the Stephen Talkhouse in Amangansett, Long Island.

The combination of the three of us learning to play together as a small ensemble has been only slightly challenging, but really feels fun. Jorma has not only written great original tunes and songs, but has a great knack for finding obscure old country, blues and gospel delicacies.

The audiences have been really responsive for us, which had had me wondering initially how that would work out. Jorma is most known for his work with Hot tuna, and has really loyal HT fans, but the reaction to this new venture of his has been nothing but positive. I myself have been learning the ropes about what it is like to have a road manager, tech guy, and to be treated so professionally and cared for. I could get used to this!!!

Got to take a ferry from the tip of Long Island over to New London CT, then on up to Boston. Weather was warm, sunny, the ferry ride felt like old hometown to me.
Something that I had been hoping for on this touring is a chance to learn new approaches, licks (at this point I seem to be stealing lots of them from JK) and learning how to play without a Bass player. It has been easier than anticipated. Thank goodness!!!! Well that is all for today, I am at the Logan terminal, awaiting to board the plane, trust all is well with you, will write again soon. Next stop Telluride with the infamous BoomChicks see you there!

My best, Sally

Good Morning from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, where there is lots of amazing music, musicians, and hot weather! The skies are filled with lots of smoke from all the fires going on in the state of Colorado, but it doesnt keep down any of the energy from the audience here! This time around I am here appearing with a group called The BoomChicks, an all woman group that includes Allison Brown, Andrea Zonn, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Sally Truitt and myself. We played Telluride last year, and the audience liked it so much that we had to do it again this year. This year is particularly exciting for all us BoomChicks, as we have many special guests, including Chris Thile, Mike Marshall, Joe Craven, Dirk Powell, Christian Theele, Emmylou Harris, and the Omni Goddess of Voice, Linda Rondstadt. I can hardly figure out how to tell you all what an honor and special time this was for all of us.

How likely in our BoomChick wildest dreams scenarios, did or could we have ever imagined that Linda Ronstadt would be kind enough to become a Boomchick for the day, and Emmylou too? We had lots of fun, likely told too many jokes, but had a great time. There is no audience like the Telluride audience, none anywhere in the universe. Generous with their attention to the players, they show lots of love and good cheer for all throughout a long 4 days in the hot sun, rain, snow sometimes, hail, lightning, thunder, all at 9300 feet in elevation. Just goes to show you so, just catching up with all of you, keep faith in what you do and what you find good in your lives,.

Sincerely, sally

Just played the Fillmore West last night in SF, what a great place to play! It is, to my mind anyway, legendary to all. Last night I rejoined the tour, and this week, for all the California shows, we have a great player, GE Smith, many of you will recognize him from the Saturday Night Live TV show. He is playing mandolin, while Barry Mitterhoff is off teaching for this next week and a half. It was a fun show, again, I think possibly a bit of a surprise to HT fans, but, again, they showed their appreciation for the different sides of Jorma's playing style.

The weather is, as usual, perfect in the SF Bay Area. Had a day off, so took the Larkspur Ferry, just for a back and forth trip across the San Pablo Bay. More than fantastic. Just wanted to let anyone know who has come to any of the shows, that if they have any photos they took of any of the shows, you could submit them to the Webmaster of this site, and he will post them for you. I would love to see any photos you all might have.

The tour bus is big, comfortable, and sometimes feels a bit like a small ocean liner all-new to me!!! Anyway, will close with a thought for the day: Always remember to let your beloved know that indeed they are beloved to you.

On down the road, Sally

Finished up a great visit with the family, went swimming in the creek by my brother's house. To me sometimes there is just nothing like a cold-water creek to immerse the tired overheated body into. The creek runs through a beautiful canyon, filled with sycamores, digger pines, and oak, including the lesser-liked version called poison oak. Itchy just thinking about the possibilities.
Well, it is off today on the bus down to LA, the land of beautiful people and beautiful cars or should I say beautiful cars and beautiful people? Tonight we play McCabes, in Santa Monica.

7/8/02
We just finished two nights at McCabe's in Santa Monica sold out shows again; Jorma has these amazing legions of fans. Some of the fans are folks who have barely ever missed any shows of his over the last twenty years or so! They seem to really accept this new musical offering of his with great enthusiasm. The material includes the Delmore Brothers, Slim Smith, Jimmy Rogers, Washington Phillips-- all kinds of older, obscure material that needs its day in the sun again.

During the stay In Santa Monica, again I saw some dear old friends, and then the universe gave me one of those moments that come along once in a lifetime. As I was leaving the hotel with my gears and guitars, actually I was standing in front of the elevator, when the elevator door opened, and who should be in there, but none other than the soul minister of all times for me, Little Richard. Dressed absolutely to the nines, in a dark maroon suit with sequins lining the edges, looking so beautiful and healthy, was the man himself. Well, my first instinct was to say something possibly tactless, or including a cuss word or two--but, instead, I did the next silly thing, which was to give a small bow to the man. I just couldn't help it! This man is legendary, and what happened next was so delicious. He looked at my guitars, looked at me, held out his hand to shake mine, and gave me his blessing! That is one good thing to happen just before a gig!!! It put a smile on my face for the daylong.

During the wee hours of the morning of the 8th, we were able to stop alongside the highway and just look up at the incredible Milky Way. There was nothing but quiet and the stars and us I don't think I have ever quite seen such a display of the sky, not in many years. How humbling. Now we have just driven all night, at the moment traveling through hot and beautiful Arizona, on the way to OK City. On the bus we have the smaller crew, we are on our way to play in Pittsburgh, PA. That is where we will pick up with Barry Mitterhoff again; the last 6 shows have been with GE. All along the music just keeps getting more fluid and interesting. It is a challenge to learn to let go of the bluegrass boundaries I have lived (happily, I might add) with for the last twenty-five years. In fact, I can't think of a better way to get that chance!

7/15/02
Aaahhhhh! We have a day off. We have been doing some serious traveling again. We arrived in Pittsburgh, after three days across the country. Played the Rosebud in Pittsburgh, great fun and then hopped into the bus for a long drive to New Jersey, to play at the Phil Lesh and Friends concert. This was at the PNC Arts Center in the Garden State. Derek Trucks was there, along with us and with, of course, Phil Lesh. The PNC is a near behemoth of an open-air ampitheater, with great sound. The audience went nearly nuts during our set. Lots of interplay between the fans and JK. We felt loved for sure.

Then we headed off to Woodstock, NY to play at the Bearsville Theater. I got my first real taste of the Tuna fans at this gig. Again, they were very accepting and enthusiastic of the music, and very boisterous in their appreciation. In fact, during an interactive moment with the audience, I was preparing to play a solo piece, and someone from the audience yelled out "Hey Jorma, give Sally a raise!" Need say no more on that! Made The Boss smile. Last night, we played the Turning Point in Piermont NY, possibly the nations smallest nightclub, but a regular for musicians to hit on the circuit. My favorite moment of the evening was the first of the two shows, when we prepared to take to the stage. As we walked up to the stage, the room full of fans, we noticed that someone from the audience had removed Barry Mitterhoff's chair from the stage. Well, we had to ask for it back, as the room was sold out, and Barry had no chair. Some very bold fans

So, that is all I can fill you in on for now, thanks for taking the time to read and hopefully get a vicarious moment from it all. If anyone out there reading this has been to any of the concerts, drop a line onto the guest forum. Would love to hear from you! Till then, may the sun always smile upon you!
