A Retrospective for 2003

Nov. 30, 2003

Hi all!

Again it is time to give thanks to all who have helped me through another busy year! Fall is in the air and in the trees as well. Winter will be showing it’s own colors sometime soon, with it’s cold clear nights along with the occasional snowy day.

This past year saw me, again, in England and Scotland for a month during the spring where I had the opportunities to not only teach many wonderful and caring reso students, play some really fun gigs with another fellow slide player who goes by the name of Johnny Dickinson, but I also traveled for pleasure up to the Western Highlands of Scotland, the Peaks District, Yorkshire, London, Northumberland National Park, and as well as the eastern coast of England, hiking, taking photographs and traveling along the incredible Highlands by train. I am including on the photo page many new photos of Scotland, and England as well for you to see.

There was also travel to North Carolina, Washington DC, Maryland, South Dakota, New Mexico, Ohio and, of course, as many adventures here in Colorado as well. Lots of gigging, recording, and producing, with great musicians -- Gerry O’Beirne, Jorma Kaukonen, Barry Mitterhoff, the infamous Boomchicks, Patrick Landeza (a wonderful Hawaiin Slack Key guitarist ), Darol Anger, Kathy Kallick, Yonder Mountain String Band and from the great state of Michigan, Steppin In It.

A great bunch of fellows from the Sore Fingers Dobro Class, Kingham School, in the sunny and hot Cotswolds, UK 2003.

RockyGrass was as it is always is, an absolute blast, with friends coming across the Pond to attend the camp, play music till late nite, (I have really understanding neighbors) and hear the great festival music from the Planet Bluegrass folks.

Got my very first own serious spider bite, late one nite after making merry with music friends on the deck of my house, sneaky little things they are…

Indeed, this has been a fairly busy year, with many wonderful events in my life-- so much to give thanks for. The traveling I was able to do provided me with chances to make new friends and visit with longtime friends while always having music as the cornerstone of it all. Music is my touchstone, my heart and my soul.

My first thanks will always go out to my family and closest pals who unflinchingly support me in my artistic hopes and endeavors: Mom, Linda, Daniel, Patty, Bob, Dale, Steve, Sally T, Dede Fraser, KC & Eric, Laurel Bliss, the Open Road Bluegrass Band, James Tuttle, Lennie Harvey, Tim and Kate Crocker in London, Bernie R for giving me a room in London, Andy Seward for the great studio time in Yorkshire ( I hope we can do that more! ), Steve Baughman and Gerry O’Beirne- for teaching me all those wonderful tunes and for the amazing studio time as well- Amy & Al, Maria, Ti, Kathy Kallick, Ben Wingate (Wingate Designs), Del Williams, Gus Skinas, the Steppin’ In It Band, Andy & Cheryl Winston, Spencer Walts, John & Debra Dickinson, Bill Dalton, Dave & Diane Currie, Jason Dilg for the song duets and the singing (still lots more to learn Jason!), Tony Grief, Romano P, Todd Livingston (of course!), Yonder Mountain String Band, Benny Galloway & Casey Verbeck; last, not the least, my little jaguar kitty cat-- from my heart thank you for the things you all gracefully teach me.

Thanks to all the great Music Camps and their Fearless Directors who provide me with the chance to teach and help bring new pathways to students: Steve Syzmanski (Rocky Grass Academy), Jim Magill ( the Swannanoa Gathering), Jorma & Vanessa Kaukonen (Fur Peace Ranch), Walt Michaels ( Common Ground on the Hill ), John Wirtz ( Sore Fingers, UK). I have so much fun when I get to go to these camps and always come away with something added to my life-be it new friends, adventures or memories.

A Big Thank You to all the students who somehow manage to get through all my classes in one piece. I really do know what it takes from you to attend classes and lessons- a quest for betterment, a spirit of adventure and strength of humor.

An other-worldly thank you to Charles Sawtelle and Frank Edmondson- I miss you both, but somehow you are still here with me.

Planet Bluegrass for all their help and support; Patrick O’Kelly for all your graciousness, all the good folks who visit my website and leave little notes for me to enjoy; last, but not the least- my favorite local restaurant, La Mariposa- a sincere thank you!

If we all keep moving forward, even in these unusual and sometimes difficult times, we can all find those moments in life that remind us of how precious life is, and how much spirit there is to share; indeed, a common ground for us all to walk upon and pass along to the next kindred spirit. Thank you EVERYONE for helping me keep my faith in life and in music -- my sincere & best wishes to you all.
